‘Chandramukhi 2’ Fails in Kerala While Mammootty’s ‘Kannur Squad’

Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated movie, ‘Chandramukhi 2,’ which serves as the Tamil sequel to the blockbuster ‘Chandramukhi,’ has encountered a setback at the Kerala box office. The film, directed by P. Vasu, has failed to replicate the success of its predecessor, reportedly earning only a meager sum of Rs 44 lakhs during its initial three days of release in the state.

Despite the considerable buzz surrounding the film, it has received lackluster reviews in Kerala. Considering its status as a sequel to Rajinikanth’s ‘Chandramukhi,’ itself an official remake of the Malayalam classic ‘Manichitrathazhu,’ expectations were understandably high. The movie was released on over 140 screens across Kerala on September 28, 2023.

‘Chandramukhi 2’ is a comedy-horror film that features an ensemble cast, including Raghava Lawrence, Kangana Ranaut, and Lakshmi Menon in pivotal roles. The film also sees Vadivelu reprising his iconic character from the original, alongside talents such as Raadhika Sarathkumar, Mahima Nambiar, Srushti Dange, Rao Ramesh, Subiksha Krishnan, and more. The combination of M. M. Keeravani’s music, R. D. Rajasekhar’s cinematography, and Anthony’s editing skills promised a compelling cinematic experience. However, the film’s underwhelming performance in Kerala suggests that it may have fallen short of audience expectations.

In contrast, Mammootty’s ‘Kannur Squad’ premiered on the same date and has been receiving highly positive feedback from the audience. According to sources, the movie has grossed more than Rs 20 crores worldwide within just three days of its release. Directed by debutant Roby Varghese Raj, ‘Kannur Squad’ seems to have resonated with viewers and is enjoying significant success.
