Beloved ‘Friends’ Star Matthew Perry Passes Away at 54, drowning believed to be a cause

Matthew Perry, celebrated for his unforgettable role as Chandler Bing on the iconic TV series ‘Friends,‘ has passed away at the age of 54. The tragic incident took place at his Los Angeles home, where on a Saturday, police officers familiar with the case reported finding him dead in a hot tub. The Los Angeles Police Department’s robbery-homicide detectives are currently investigating his death.

On that fateful day, Perry had returned to his Los Angeles home after an energetic two-hour session of pickleball, sending his assistant on an errand. When the assistant returned approximately two hours later, they discovered Perry unresponsive in the Jacuzzi and promptly dialed 911 for emergency assistance. Notably, no drugs were found at the scene, and there is no evidence of foul play.

LAPD Officer Drake Madison, speaking to the Associated Press, confirmed that officers had been called to investigate the death of a male in his 50s in the area. The circumstances surrounding his passing have left fans worldwide in shock and mourning the loss of this beloved actor.

In addition to “Friends,” Perry gained critical recognition for his role as Ron Clark in “The Ron Clark Story,” which showcased his versatility as an actor in both television and film. He also enjoyed a successful career in the world of theatre, with appearances in plays like “The End of Longing.” Beyond acting, he was involved in various projects as a writer and producer.

Matthew Perry’s life journey began with his birth to John Bennett Perry, an actor, and Suzanne Morrison, a Canadian journalist. His mother raised him in Ottawa after his parents divorced when he was just a year old. He attended Ashbury College and later pursued his education at The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California.

Throughout his career, Perry candidly shared his struggles with addiction, especially during his time on “Friends.” He later sought treatment for his substance abuse issues and became an advocate for addiction recovery and mental health awareness.

He once wrote in his memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing”: “Friends were huge. I couldn’t jeopardise that. I had a secret, and no one could know.” Perry’s battle with addiction was intense, as he underwent detoxification a remarkable 65 times and spent around $9 million on his journey towards sobriety.
